Description
Adapalene 0.1% Gel is a topical acne treatment containing adapalene, a retinoid-like medicine. It is used to treat acne by helping prevent pimples from forming beneath the surface of the skin.
It is generally applied as a thin layer to the affected area once daily, commonly at bedtime. More frequent application does not make the medicine work faster and may increase skin irritation.
Uses
- Treatment of acne vulgaris
- Helps prevent new pimples from forming
- Helps reduce clogged pores
- Helps treat blackheads and whiteheads associated with acne
- Can be used on acne-prone areas as directed
Current U.S. OTC labeling specifically lists acne treatment as the purpose and use of adapalene 0.1% gel.
How It Works
Adapalene belongs to the retinoid class. It acts on processes involved in the formation of acne and helps prevent pimples from developing beneath the skin.
During the first few weeks, acne can temporarily appear worse as previously developing pimples become visible. It can take 8–12 weeks or longer to experience the full benefit.
Common Side Effects
Possible side effects, particularly during the first few weeks, include:
- Dryness
- Redness
- Scaling or peeling
- Burning
- Stinging
- Mild pain or irritation at the application site
These effects commonly occur during the initial 2–4 weeks and may decrease as the skin adjusts.
Important Safety Information
For external use only.
Do not apply adapalene to cuts, damaged skin, eczema, or sunburned skin. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, mouth and other sensitive areas.
Limit exposure to sunlight and tanning beds while using adapalene, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
Avoid waxing areas where adapalene has been applied because the skin may be more sensitive.
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare professional before using adapalene.
Do not use more than directed. Using extra gel or applying it more frequently can increase irritation without improving results.
If severe irritation, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or other signs of an allergic reaction occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Storage
Store the gel according to the conditions stated on the product packaging. Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.
